Speaker: Andy Christofides, pastor of St Mellons Baptist Church in Cardiff
Title: Useful or Useless, Which are you?
Cost: £10 overnight or £8 day visitor
Times: Starts 7pm Friday, 9.30 am Saturday and finishes 8pm that day.

Final date for application forms is 10th October 2006. If you need a form, let me know and I'll photocopy one for you. My car will be available to take people up and back for the Saturday.

Reunion at Hayes - 17th December 2005

Hey everyone - even though I've sent out an email, I thought I'd post it on the blog just to make sure I haven't missed telling anyone. ,

Around the Christmas period the annual thing we do, is head up to London one Saturday for the entire day. We usually make a stop at places such as Hamleys (world's biggest toy shop), Harrods (a new addition this year!), the Christmas lights and finally we end up at Trafalgar Square in the evening to sing carols with the London City Mission under the big Christmas tree. Since we usually get back late on the Saturday people are welcome to stay over that night. And since we set out quite promptly on the Saturday morning, people are also invited to stay on the Friday night, making a weekend of it.

If we get a big enough group, then we will be allowed to use the church building to put people up for the nights they are here. If you are local to this area, you are also welcome to stay at the church for any of the nights suggested as the bigger the group, the better fellowship we can all enjoy. Or you can join us during the day and go back to your own homes in the evening.

Date: Saturday 17th December
Costs - £6 Travelcard, money for food whilst up in London plus any shopping you might want to do, pound or so for breakfast if you want to join us for that.

So this sort of reunion is open to everyone who wants to come - from Aber, from Camp or any others whoyou know. PLEASE let me know if you plan to come I hope many of you will be able to come.

Reflections on Aber!

Just a reminder that now the summer break is finished 16up is starting back next week, on the 11th September, with Graham King leading a discussion on "Reflections on Aber". If you want to do a bit of preparation then read Romans CH 6, 7 & 8 as that is what the main speaker, Stuart Olyott, preached on during the conference.

Also several people have ordered CD's & MP3's from Aber so if anyone wants to hear the messages again or for the first time, then please ask. Stuart Olyott has also written a commentary on Romans called "the Gospel as It Really Is: Paul's Epistle to the Romans Simply Explained" (published by Evangelical Press) which is reckoned to be one of the best around. It is out of print at the moment but you can buy it used from Amazon.com in the States for around $5 and then $9 postage. Altogether it works out at about £8 in total, which is what Evangelical Press would have probably sold it for were it still being published. If anyone doesn't have an Amazon account but would like the book, please let me know and we can sort something out. Apparently he is as easy to read as he is to listen to.

I hope you will all come on Sunday to the after church meeting.

WEC International open day

This coming bank holiday will hold WEC's (a missionary organisation) annual open day. The day will hold a couple of meetings to learn about the growth of the gospel abroad and there will be time to eat (you can buy hot food or take a pack lunch) and relax in the grounds. Gerald: Dare I ask what I missed this year?

Sarah: The talks/speakers this year were some of the best I've heard at Banner over the last 5 years. Sharon James spoke particularly well on "God's Design for Women" and just as a reminder to all of us - here are some extra books she really recommended on the subject:

"What the Bible says about going out, marriage and sex" by Dr Chris Richards and Dr Liz Jones
"Girl Talk: Mother-Daughter Conversations on Biblical Womandhood" by Carolyn Mahaney and Nicole Mahaney
"The Relationships Revolution" by Nigel Pollard
"Biblical Womandhood, nine studies for individuals or groups" by Sarah Young

There were also very good talks by Sinclair Ferguson on "To Live is Christ" in three parts, 1) The Gift of Christ, 2) Our Life with Christ and 3) True Devotion to Christ. The first one was very challenging as it reflected on the tremendous meaning and implication of Romans 8 v 32 "He who did not spare his only Son but gave him up for us all - how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things".

Jonathan Watson also delivered a very helpful , earnest address about Preparing for Marriage and Andrew Love talked on Trusting God for the future and knowing his will in all things. I think some people have the tapes on order so I know I'll certainly be borrowing them and listening to them again. Plus we all came away with free books didn't we!

If others could post things that either challenged them, or encourgaed them or things they enjoyed about Banner - that would be great. Lets keep discussing it for months to come rather than forget what we have learnt!

Religion and politics

Don't forget there is a 16+ meeting after the evening service, led by Richard Stonelake, on politics and it's relevance to Christians.

Here is the handout he gave on the election/moral issues. It contains questions that we should ask our local candidates and then use our votes according to how many questions they answer satisfactorily

Abortion - Would you favour a reduction in the term for "social" abortions i.e those done for any reason other than to save the mother's life (at present 24 weeks)? Do you oppose late abortions carried out because of foetal abnormalities?
Embryo research - Are you opposed to the use of human embryos for a) cloning; b) choosing a child's gender; c) chimeras (human cells blended with cells of other species; d) hybrids (human cells implanted in other animals; e) gathering stem cells?
Assisted suicide - Would you oppose any move to make assisted suicide easier (no longer an offence)?
Euthanasia - Do you oppose the provisions of the Mental Capacity Bill which a) require hospitals to allow patients with little hope of recovery to die and b) require patients to be deprived of food and water if they fall into a coma or become too ill to speak for themselves?
Religious hatred - Do you agree that the measure contained in the Serious Organised Crime Bill restricts freedom of speech, particularly for Christians?
Civil Partnership - Do you agree that this measure weakens the sanctity of marriage and is misguided?

Paintballing on Saturday 2nd April

For everyone who has booked to go paintballing on the 2nd, here are the details for the day:

Times: We will need to arrive on-site by 9am and will finish at 3.30-4pm (approximately).
Transport: Most of us will be bringing cars so there will be enough lifts for everyone. You can download maps from the online site but I will make sure everyone has one before we leave. We can go in convoy so no one gets lost.
Lunch: BBQ lunch with salads and all the trimmings
Clothing: Wear suitable outdoor clothes and footwear for the day.
Day schedule: We will play approximately 8 - 10 games and each game lasts for approximately 20 minutes with a 10 minute interval in between.
Provisions given on the day: Inferno Semi-Automatic Paintball Gun, Cammo Suit, Face Mask, 1 Mk Thunderflash , Insurance, Flak Jacket (If required), Free 550 Rounds Free, Tea/Coffee & refreshments
Location of venue : Hot Shots is located between the villages of Upper Bucklebury and Cold Ash, just off the A4 north of Thatcham, close to Newbury.
Money: If you haven't paid yet, please get your £35 to me. Thank you to those who have already paid me. You will need to bring money with you on the day if you want to purchase extra paintballs (£5 for 100 paintballs) or smoke grenades. They accept credit cards and cheques (with a valid cheque card) but not AMEX Cards.

If anyone else still wants to go let me know as I can book extra places but would still need to be a week in advance so that you can get the extra paintballs.

Imperial War Museum, Easter Monday

The plan is to meet at 11.30am outside the front entrance of The Imperial War Museum.

We'll have lunch before we go in, spend the afternoon in the museum, and then find somewhere reasonably priced to eat in the evening.

You'll need either a packed lunch/money for lunch, as well as a travelcard for the day and some money for food in the evening. Admission to the museum itself is free! We might be doing a fair amount of walking as well, so some sensible footwear and waterproofs might be wise.

Please ask Karen, Sarah or myself about travel arrangements.

Is evolution true?

Paul Garner, of Biblical Creation Ministries, will be answering the question of evolution and creation, in an open meeting, at Feltham Evangelical Church, on Saturday 19th March @ 7.15pm.

This would be a great opportunity to invite non-creationist friends to.

Let me know if you're interested in going and need transport.

If you're unable to attend the meeting on Saturday, but would still like to hear Paul Garner, he will be speaking at Hounslow West Evangelical Church on the following Sunday evening @ 6.30pm.

And for those of who can't make either of the above - Paul Garner is also speaking at Amyand Park Chapel (Amyand Park Road, St Margaret's, Twickenham - http://www.amyandparkchapel.com) at two morning sessions on Saturday 19th March between 10am - 12pm.

We are going to go out for a meal to celebrate this on the 5th March (next Saturday) around 7.30. Once the restaraunt is booked I will confirm this. Everyone is invited. We are hoping to go to a Carvery, possibly the one in Windsor or the one in Amersham (again to be confirmed).

The Christian Institute Seminar

On the 12th of February (this coming Saturday) the Christian Institute is hosting a meeting on the 'incitement to religious hatred' legislation which is currently being proposed.

Daniel Scot will be one of the speakers at the meeting, he was prosecuted
under a similar Australian law ('Vilification law') when he criticised Islam
at a church seminar in march 2002.
